Liguria – mountain
region right near the sea
Liguria spreads over a narrow strip that goes from the French border
to Tuscany. The region
of Liguria has over 300 km of coastline, but only reaches 30 km
inland. Directly behind the coast are the first hills and mountains
(up to 2000 m) of the Maritime Alps. The Ligurian Maritime Alps
belong to the preferred destination of alternative tourism.
Liguria is divided in two parts. From Tuscany to Genoa there is the
"Riviera di Levante". The part that stretches from Genoa
to the French border is called "Riviera di Ponente" –
the region in Liguria where the sun shines longest
